DENVER (KDVR) -- A coffee shop in the Five Points neighborhood is eliminating the guilt that comes with to-go drinks by offering glass jars in place of plastic cups for just a quarter.Hearth, located at 2500 Lawrence St., offers baked goods and drinks with coffee roasted by Denver-based sister brand Tablon Coffee. CU chemists say dissolving plastic with electricity could be future of recycling "We do have a dream that many local specialty coffee shops could join forces and accept jar returns from fellow shops further encouraging exploration and a reduction in waste," coffee director and roaster Kevin Mayberry told FOX31 in an email.Hearth is not alone in the effort. DENVER (KDVR) -- A two-story sculpture named "Umi" came to life on Saturday at Hogan Park in the Aurora Highlands neighborhood. Daniel Popper added the interactive exhibit as part of the Art in the Park program. Popper is a South African sculpture artist specializing in large, human-like sculptures made of wood, fiberglass and natural fibers. He focuses on the relationship between humans and nature. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a boat fire that ignited early Monday morning at a marina in Key Largo. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.The blaze consumed a docked boat, measuring approximately 37 feet in length. It’s trial time for a former South Florida police officer accused of kidnapping, but that’s not all. He and another officer were taking a homeless man into custody when, officials said, they took things too far. Hialeah Police Officer Rafael Otano was accused of kidnapping and beating a homeless man along with former Officer Lorenzo Orfila in December 2022. Witnesses who found the man were heard for the first time on Monday. Bodycam footage from Dec.17 showed a beaten and bloody Jose Ortega Gutierrez. He claimed that 27-year-old Otano and 22-year-old Orfila kidnapped him, drove him to a remote location and beat him up after a disturbance at a bakery. However, the footage isn’t from either of the two officers. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Transportation is proposing new rules designed to encourage seat belt use by car and truck passengers, including those sitting in the back seat. The new rules proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would require manufacturers to equip vehicles with additional seat belt warning systems for the right front passenger and for rear seats to encourage increased seat belt use. “Wearing a seat belt is one of the most effective ways to prevent injury and death in a crash,” NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson said in a statement. “In 2021, almost 43,000 people lost their lives on America’s roads, and half of those in vehicles were unbelted.
