Southern California beachgoers are very familiar with rip currents, which can sweep unprepared swimmers out to sea in an instant. This powerful -and sometimes deadly- force of nature was captured on video in New Jersey over Labor Day Weekend when a bodyboarder jumped into action to save a man who was struggling to get back to shore. The incident happened on Sunday, Sept. 3 at Long Island Beach.Footage recorded by Steve Houser shows him paddling out to a man who, along with several other people, was being pulled into deeper water by a fast-moving rip current. With the help of another swimmer, the man grabs onto the bodyboard. Houser then pulls him through the heavy surf and safely back into shallow water, the video shows.Steve Houser pulls the struggling swimmer back to shore at Long Island Beach, New Jersey on Sept. 3, 2023. A lot of bands are redefining what “hardcore” music means in 2023, and the Santa Cruz, California quartet known as Scowl are one of the most expressive. Refreshingly all over the place, going from speedy guttural punk to witchy alternative rock, Kat Moss (vocals), Malachi Greene (guitar), Bailey Lupo (bass), Cole Gilbert (drums), and Mikey Bifolco (guitar) built a following with the aggressive grinds on their debut album, How Flowers Grow in late 2021, and a relentless touring schedule getting it out there. Road life and experiences inspired a lot on their latest EP Psychic Dance Routine, and saw the band evolve as their sound and live show got attention. With bright green hair and a vocal that easily goes from evil grunt to sultry wail, Moss is a marvel to watch on stage, as many of us first did at this year’s Coachella, both in the desert and on the fest’s You Tube Livestream. The band’s partnership with Taco Bell’s ‘Feed The Beat’ program (which provides touring bands ...Flash mob summer: How can retail theft stampedes be stopped?

When brazen groups of thieves in all-black clothes and hoodies sprinted into the Nordstrom at the Topanga Mall, the Yves Saint Laurent store at the Americana on Brand in Glendale and a pop-up Gucci store at South Coast Plaza, 911 calls from startled workers and shoppers came immediately. It wasn’t soon enough.Stealth planning, disguises, sheer ransacking speed – the thieves are in and out in two to four minutes – and getaways in multiple cars mean even a rapid law enforcement response can be too slow. With flash mobs of thieves committing dozens of heists in high-end and other stores around Southern California since early July, the problem became so dire that officials announced a task force focusing on cell tower dumps, surveillance video and other high-tech tools.Arrests are starting to happen. But halting the trend may take more time.“A lot of this stuff happens over social media and that’s how they coordinate with one another. (BCN) -- A panel of federal appellate judges Tuesday left in place a lower court order that bars San Francisco from using the city's laws against sleeping on the streets to prosecute people who are involuntarily homeless. The short 93-word order resolves, at least for the time being, the city's motion to modify the lower court injunction while the city pursues its appeal of that ruling. The appeals court said its decision was "without prejudice," meaning the city can renew the motion at a later date if circumstances warrant. While both sides characterized the ruling as helpful to their positions, the order appears to kick the most contentious issues down the road for later resolution. Owners of Oakland group homes slapped with lawsuit The case arises from a lawsuit filed against the city in September 2022 by the Coalition on Homelessness, an advocacy group, and a number of individuals, including several who have experienced homelessness.
