A teen got quite the scare at a South Florida fair when she said the latch holding her in her seat failed and ended the night at the hospital with her mother.A cell phone camera recorded as Riley and her mother Anita Young rode the Hurricane Betsy. “Oh my God it came out,” said Young, captured in the video. “Don’t move.”“Stop, I want to get off,” said Riley, as she’s heard sobbing in the recording. “It just started off really normal and then just kind of took a turn for the worst,” Riley told 7News. They claimed the safety bar of one ride gave way in mid-run. “When we go up in the air, the latch that goes over her lap that holds her in snapped open right before it starts spinning,” Young said. “Whenever it started spinning, I had to hold my daughter because we almost flew out of it. I had to hold the latch down.”When the mother told the ride operator that the latch unlocked, the operator was surprise...

With Chicago Bears jobs hanging in the balance over the final 5 weeks, coach Matt Eberflus is focused on ‘leadership’

The NFL Black Monday countdown was at five weeks when Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus welcomed his players back to Halas Hall after their bye week.Five weeks for Eberflus to convince team leadership his 4-8 Bears have made enough progress that he shouldn’t be a part of the annual league tradition of firings the day after the regular season ends.Perhaps only Chairman George McCaskey, President Kevin Warren and general manager Ryan Poles know if Eberflus, now 7-22 as the Bears coach, can do anything to sway the decision over the winnable final slate of games against the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers. When the topic came up a few times with reporters Monday, Eberflus — who has been around enough football teams over 32 seasons to be familiar with this ticking clock — stuck to his talking points about focusing on his daily work.He didn’t bite on a question about whether he thinks his job is safe, given p...

BATU PALANO, Indonesia (AP) — Rescuers searching the hazardous slopes of Indonesia’s Mount Marapi volcano found more bodies among the climbers caught by a surprise eruption two days ago, raising the number of confirmed and presumed dead to 23.More than 50 climbers were rescued after the initial eruption Sunday, and 11 others were initially confirmed dead. Another eruption Monday spewed a new burst of hot ash as high as 800 meters (2,620 feet) into the air and temporarily halted search operations. The latest bodies were found not too far from the eruption site, estimated to be only a few meters (yards) away, said Edi Mardianto, the deputy police chief in West Sumatra province. The bodies of five climbers have been recovered, and 18 are presumed dead because they were so close to the eruption of hot gases and ash.“The rest we want to evacuate are 18 and we expect they are no longer alive. The team will evacuate and take them to the hospital tomorrow or today to be identified,” M...

No one knew the location of the checks, which the couple desperately needed to survive. It's been a nightmare for Val Kovac and her husband, Army veteran Michael Martin Kovac. The couple lives at an assisted living center in south St. Louis. They haven’t received Michael’s $2,000-a-month Army pension check since August. The couple moved from their south city home to the assisted living center, and that's when the trouble struck. They had informed the VA and the U.S. Postal Service of their move. But it's been four consecutive months without checks. “I think it's stinky (that) they were doing it. They were sending the checks to the bank, then all of a sudden they just stopped,” Val said. “And I called and asked did we get cancelled for anything for some reason, and they said, ‘No, no; you should be getting your checks.’” Close Thanks for signing up!
