A heatwave is set to blanket Southern California starting on Monday, and while KTLA 5 meteorologist Kacey Montoya normally informs the region of the forecast, a special guest appeared on the KTLA 5 Weekend Morning News to let SoCal know that it’s going to get hot. “Night School” star and legendary comedian Tiffany Haddish, who joined KTLA to announce the winner of KTLA’s "A Summer of Funny" series, mentioned to the anchors that while she has always wanted to do the weather on the news, no one had ever given her the chance. That all changed on Saturday. With a few tips from Kacey, Tiffany Haddish successfully informed the region of the upcoming forecast. “Just know this,” Haddish said. “In the valleys, the wind will be blowing strong, so tape your wig down. Hunker down, because it will fly off.” Communities along the coast will be slightly cooler, according to “meteorologist” Tiffany Haddish. “The coastal areas will [experience] very moderate temperature...

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:12:48 GMT

SAN MATEO — It was hard to tell that Serra had won Saturday afternoon, that the San Mateo powerhouse had beaten one of Northern California’s top programs in an anticipated high school football showdown that would help set the tone for the season among the elite teams.Serra scored three touchdowns in an opening quarter that left Folsom wobbling. The Padres hit their guests from the Sacramento region with a trick-play touchdown on the game’s first snap and punished the Bulldogs with jarring hits — some late, according to the officials — that threatened to turn the matchup into a rout. But Folsom steadied itself, at least defensively, and Serra had to hold on for a 21-14 victory that ended with the Padres taking a knee after recovering an onside kick and converting a game-clinching first down in the final minutes.“We need to be a tougher organization,” Serra coach Patrick Walsh said. “We just weren’t tough enough. We just weren’...

In Iowa and elsewhere, bans on LGBTQ+ ‘conversion therapy’ become a conservative target

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — One of Iowa’s largest cities repealed its ban on “conversion therapy” — the discredited practice of trying to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling — after a Christian organization threatened legal action, part of a deepening national movement to challenge protections for LGBTQ+ kids. The city council in Waterloo voted this week to remove its restrictions after Liberty Counsel warned in a letter June 30 that it would “take further action” if the city did not repeal the ordinance by August 1. It was enacted in May.The organization, which is based in Orlando, Florida, argued the ordinance infringes on the constitutional right to free speech and acted on behalf of a therapist in Waterloo “who was concerned about the implications of this on the practice of counseling,” Mat Staver, Liberty Counsel founder and chair, said in an interview in which he promised further litigation targeting states. In Iowa and across the c...

A day after two women were wounded by gunfire while sitting in the outfield seating area at Guaranteed Rate Field Friday night, questions remained on whether the shots were fired inside or outside the stadium and why the game continued despite a request from a high-ranking officer to halt play. Both women, 26 and 42, were expected to recover from the unusual incident at the Bridgeport ballpark that occurred during the fourth inning. Officials on Saturday described a delay in the police response, because the incident first appeared to be a fan who needed first-aid for an undetermined wound.“No one understood it was a bullet or gunshot. So there was this time delay as that person got treatment,” Scott Reifert, the Sox senior vice president of communications told reporters Saturday. “Then as they investigated a little bit more, we stared to understand what may have happened.”Officials said no one knows exactly where the gunshot came from. The game was not interrup...
