PITTSBURGH (AP) — Desmond King isn’t sure why the Houston Texans cut him last week. The veteran cornerback also doesn’t particularly care.It took all of 48 hours for King to find a new gig, one at the other end of the NFL spectrum. King practically sprinted to Pittsburgh, eager to join a defense littered with stars and an organization that hasn’t been through a full-on rebuild like the Texans are undergoing in decades. The Steelers signed King on Thursday to give them another experienced voice in a secondary that includes perennial All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and eight-time Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson. By Monday afternoon King was out on the practice field trying to absorb as much of the playbook as he can before Sunday’s opener against San Francisco.Asked if it’s reasonable to think he can learn enough to get on the field this weekend, King just laughed.“Absolutely,” he said. “As long as I know what everybody’s doing, I’ll play whereve...

Maura Healey voiced her support for those on strike.“We honor you and your courage and we stand with you in this fight,” Healey said. “We’re dealing with something that’s not new,” said actor Daniel Washington. “It’s just the straw that broke the camel’s back.” SAG-AFTRA represents thousands of actors currently on strike. In Downtown Crossing, Sen. The Mets’ Pete Alonso continues to amaze the Amazins.Teammates and manager Buck Showalter couldn’t help but marvel Sunday after Alonso became the fifth player in MLB history to record three years with 40 home runs through five career seasons.Alonso — who slugged his 40th and 41st home runs of 2023 during Sunday’s 6-3 win over the Mariners — also tallied his 100th RBI of the season, making him the fourth Met to reach that milestone three times.“The sky’s the limit,” said Fransisco Lindor, who joined the Mets in 2021. “I don’t think he has had his best year yet. I didn’t see the rookie season where he hit [53 home runs in 2019] but I think Pete could hit .300 and still hit 40 home runs in a year.”Alonso, a career .254 hitter, has never batted above .271 in a season, but his 187 home runs rank fifth on the Mets’ all-time list. His only year with fewer than 37 homers came in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic sh...
